The winter before the 2003 harvest was very wet. Flowering took place in clear warm weather at the end of May, under the best conditions for years. The first two weeks of August brought intense summer heat, which often precedes a great Vintage Port. The picking season in September was warm and dry. The 2003 Vintage Port is an absolute blockbuster, which according to Robert Parker “will stand proudly shoulder to shoulder with the finest ever made by Taylor's”. Parker points: 98+. Origin: Portugal, Douro. Port style: Taylor's Vintage Port 2003. Port house: Taylor's. Grapes: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca. Storage and serving: This Vintage must be decanted. Once opened it is best enjoyed on the same day. Serve slightly chilled (16 to 18ºC). Quantity: 750 ml. What can you taste? Inky purple black with a narrow magenta rim. Classic Taylor nose, with exotic scents of violets and gum cistus set against an impenetrable background of intense dark berries. The 2003 Vintage Port shows a stylish and spicy palate, displaying a tight structure of sinewy tannins and full of concentrated grapey flavours that intensify in the seemingly endless finish. Like many other great Taylor vintages. Food & spice: Lovely with a mature blue cheese such as Stilton. The soft buttery texture, mild character and tingling of the cheese are perfectly matched by the powerful majestic flavours of the Vintage Port. Other blue, buttery, soft and slightly spicy cheeses are: Cashel Blue, Roquefort, Gorgonzola and Saint Agur Blue.
