An unusually warm spring led to early flowering already in mid April. Conditions for flowering in May were almost perfect. A cool early summer was followed by very high temperatures in August. Picking began at Quinta de Vargellas on 13 September, a week later than most of the region. Conditions were perfect and the highest sugar readings in years were recorded. Because of the cool temperatures during fermentation this period was longer than usual, which ensured a good development of fruit, flavour and colour. Wine Spectator score: 92/100. Origin: Portugal, Douro. Port style: Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas 1995 Vintage Port. Port house: Taylor's. Grapes: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, Rufete. Storage and serving: This Vintage must be decanted. Once opened it is best enjoyed on the same day. Serve slightly chilled (16 to 18ºC). Quantity: 750 ml. What can you taste? Deep ruby red colour fading to brick at the rim. The aroma of ripe candied fruit, chocolate, overlaid with exotic spices and floral notes. On the palate plump fruit with dense chocolate, plums and hints of liquorice. Firm finish. Food & spice: Lovely with a mature blue cheese such as Stilton. The soft buttery texture, mild character and tingling of the cheese are perfectly matched by the powerful majestic flavours of the Vintage Port. Other blue, buttery, soft and slightly spicy cheeses are: Cashel Blue, Roquefort, Gorgonzola and Saint Agur Blue.
