After a very long cold winter and a relatively cool spring and early summer, it was only in September that the weather turned and the grapes reached full ripeness. The harvest therefore started late, but some wonderful full bodied wines were made in granite lagares with foot treading. After 2 years of ageing in large old oak vats in the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, the wine was bottled. Origin: Portugal, Douro. Port style: Niepoort 1980 Vintage Port. Port house: Niepoort. Grapes: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão and Tinta Roriz. Storage and serving: This Vintage Port is not filtered and must be decanted before drinking to enjoy it at its best. Once opened it has limited keeping time. Serve at cellar temperature (12 to 15ºC). What can you taste? Initially restrained and closed on the nose, but with time aromas of nuts, spices and pepper develop. Sweet fruit on the palate, revealing great freshness and a long firm structure with a very long finish. Food & spice: Serve at the end of a meal with cheese, especially blue cheese.
