Tawnies with an indication of age, such as “10 years”, are blended from different wines with an average age of 10 years. The longer ageing in small wooden barrels gives the characteristic tawny colour. The main features of an old tawny are the complexity of the aromas, the freshness and a persistent bouquet and refinement. After dinner 10 Years Old Tawny is a good match with cheeses and especially chocolate desserts. It can also be drunk as an aperitif, served at room temperature or slightly chilled. In 2003 Wine Spectator distinguished Niepoort 10 Years Old Tawny with an excellent score of 95 points (out of 100). Origin: Portugal, Douro. Port style: Niepoort 10 Year Old Tawny Port. Port house: Niepoort. Grapes: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão, Tinta Roriz. Storage and serving: This tawny port is filtered and ready to drink now. Once opened it can be kept for at least a month. Decanting is not necessary, you can pour directly from the bottle, lightly chilled (16 to 18ºC). What can you taste? Tawny in colour with aromas of dried apricots and crystallised mandarin peel, well integrated with a nutty character. The flavour reveals dried fruit with a fiery spirit finish. With great structure and a long finish. It offers delicious aromas of orange and lemon peel with notes of toffee, caramel and honey. Full bodied and seductive with plenty of sweet fruit and a long subtle finish that just goes on. Food & spice: Dried fruits, nuts, almonds, raisins, peaches, apricots and so on.
