Fonseca Special Ruby Port
Fonseca’s Ruby Port is one of those bottles I reach for when I want something juicy, vibrant and unmistakably Douro. It has that generous dark-berry character Fonseca is known for, but in a relaxed, easy-drinking style that still feels authentic.
Fonseca has been part of the Douro Valley since the early 1800s, sourcing fruit from prime vineyards in the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior. Even their more accessible wines share the same house signature: ripe fruit, depth and a touch of spice from traditional Portuguese winemaking.
This Ruby Port blends Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca. The wine is fermented on the skins, fortified at the ideal moment and aged for around two to three years in large seasoned oak vats to preserve its vivid colour and fresh fruit. Alcohol sits close to twenty percent, but the sweetness and berry flavours keep everything beautifully balanced.
In the glass it shows a deep ruby red with a lively purple rim. Expect aromas of black cherry, raspberry jam and a hint of cocoa. The palate is smooth and full of ripe berries, moving into darker fruit and a subtle peppery note. Soft tannins and a warm cocoa finish make this a very satisfying glass of Port wine.
Ruby Port and chocolate are an instant match — think brownies, chocolate fondant or even just a square of dark chocolate after dinner. It also shines next to blue cheese, aged cheddar or dried figs, since the salt enhances the fruit beautifully.
Serve slightly cool at 15–16 °C in a small wine glass. No need to decant. It’s one of the best everyday Port wines to enjoy on the sofa, with friends or whenever you’re simply in the mood for something comforting from the Douro Valley.
