Quinta dos Frades: A Historic Jewel of the Douro Valley

Quinta dos Frades, nestled along the banks of the Douro River in the parish of Folgosa, Armamar, stands as one of the oldest and most emblematic wine estates in Portugal. Its origins trace back to 1256 when it was donated to the Cistercian monks of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Salzedas. Originally known as Quinta da Folgosa, the estate played a significant role in the region's viticultural history.

The estate's prominence was recognized during the 18th century when it was included in the Douro Demarcations between 1757 and 1761, a pioneering effort to regulate wine production in the region. Following the dissolution of religious orders in 1834, Quinta dos Frades was auctioned in 1841 and acquired by the first Baron of Folgosa, Jerónimo de Almeida Brandão e Sousa.

In 1941, the estate entered a new era under the ownership of Comendador Delfim Ferreira, a notable industrialist. He initiated a comprehensive rehabilitation project, enlisting architect Rogério de Azevedo to modernize the estate's facilities. Under Ferreira's guidance, innovative viticultural practices were introduced, including the method of planting free-range vineyards.

Today, Quinta dos Frades spans approximately 200 hectares, featuring a remarkable collection of old vineyards. Notably, 20 hectares comprise vines over 100 years old, while newer plantings are around 40 years old. The estate cultivates a diverse array of indigenous grape varieties, such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Carvalha, Donzelinho, and Rabigato.

The estate's wine portfolio includes several distinguished labels:

  • Vinhas Velhas Grande Reserva: Crafted from a field blend of over 23 grape varieties from century-old vines, this wine undergoes traditional foot treading in granite lagares, followed by aging in French oak barrels. It is renowned for its deep color, complex aromas of black fruits, spices, and balsamic notes, culminating in a full-bodied palate with firm tannins and a long, elegant finish.

  • Vinha dos Santos: Available in both red and white expressions, this range showcases the estate's versatility. The red offers aromas of wild red berries and spices with a smooth profile, while the white presents a fruity character combined with exceptional freshness.

  • Vinha dos Deuses Reserva: This red wine is characterized by black fruit aromas, balsamic and spicy notes, and mature tannins, delivering a robust and smooth tasting experience.

Quinta dos Frades continues to honor its rich heritage while embracing modern winemaking techniques. Under the expertise of winemakers Anselmo Mendes and Diogo Lopes, the estate produces wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Douro Valley, combining tradition with innovation to create exceptional wines.
