Quinta do Bucheiro

Quinta do Bucheiro: A Historical Landmark in the Douro Valley

Quinta do Bucheiro, located in Celeirós do Douro in the Sabrosa municipality, is a historic estate with deep roots in the viticultural history of the Douro Valley. Owned by the same family since the 18th century, it stands as a symbol of the region's enduring agricultural and cultural heritage.

In the late 19th century, the estate played a notable role in the battle against the phylloxera epidemic. Joaquim Pinheiro de Azevedo Leite Pereira, a pioneering figure in Portuguese viticulture, used Quinta do Bucheiro as a site for experimental approaches to combat the disease that was devastating European vineyards. His work contributed valuable insights to the future of winemaking in the region.

Though no longer actively producing wine today, Quinta do Bucheiro remains an important piece of Douro history. Its legacy lies not in current production, but in the foundational role it played in Portugal’s viticultural development. With its terraced landscapes and traditional stone architecture, the estate continues to reflect the authentic spirit of the Douro.
