O-PORT-UNIDADE is a remarkable charitable initiative that unites the Douro Valley's Port wine producers in a shared mission of solidarity and excellence. Conceived by Axel Probst, a former German Air Force pilot and renowned Port wine expert, the project exemplifies the spirit of community and philanthropy within the wine industry.
A Vision of Unity and Charity
The genesis of O-PORT-UNIDADE dates back to 2013 when Probst sought to capture an iconic image of Port producers treading grapes together for his book on Port wine. This idea evolved into a collaborative venture where 25 leading Port houses each contributed approximately 750 kilograms of their finest old-vine grapes. These grapes were collectively foot-trodden in traditional lagares at Niepoort's winery in Vale de Mendiz, symbolizing unity and shared purpose.
The resulting 2013 Vintage Port was not only a testament to the producers' collective craftsmanship but also a vehicle for charitable giving. Proceeds from the sale of 5,000 bottles raised €100,000, which was donated to Bagos d’Ouro, a Portuguese charity supporting underprivileged children and youth in the Douro Valley.
A New Chapter: The 2023 Vintage
Building on the success of the initial release, O-PORT-UNIDADE launched a new vintage in 2023, bringing together 32 producers in a continued commitment to excellence and charity. This latest edition reaffirms the project's dedication to supporting the Douro community while showcasing the region's exceptional winemaking heritage.
Tasting Excellence
The 2013 O-PORT-UNIDADE Vintage Port has been lauded for its quality, receiving a 94-point rating from wine critic Jamie Goode. He described it as "concentrated, tannic and primary with lovely raspberry and blackberry fruit... intense and grippy, with good potential."
