The Portologist Kickstarter: A Toast to Our Success

One of the tropical Port Cocktails

Wow. We could not be more proud. What began as a simple idea to enter an overlooked niche has now become something tangible and beautiful — a real book that celebrates the art of mixing Port wine into unforgettable cocktails.

With the incredible support of more than $11,000 in pledges, we have sold our book from Mexico to Denmark, and more than 300 copies are already on their way to happy readers around the world.

How It All Started

It all began in May 2024, with a single idea — to create a book entirely dedicated to Port wine cocktails. We wanted to show the world that Port can be so much more than a sweet after-dinner drink.

The book features over fifty unique recipes, crafted and perfected with the help of some of the world’s finest bartenders and mixologists. Each drink tells a story — from the elegance of a Ruby Port spritz to the comforting depth of a Tawny-based Old Fashioned.

Over the past year, we have written, designed, and photographed a book that now fills more than two hundred pages. We even produced the photographs ourselves, pouring, shaking, and styling every glass to perfection. It was an enormous task that required endless ice cubes, fruit garnishes, and of course, plenty of Port.

Zwolle’s Port Festival and Our First Public Showcase

Our journey took another exciting turn in Zwolle, where our friends Chris and Gerda from Het Zwols Porthuis presented the first printed copies of our dummy book during The Dutch Port Wine Festival. The event took place inside Zwolle’s historic church and marked the very first public appearance of The Portologist.

If you visit Porto, you will soon be able to find our book in several special places, including the Quevedo tasting room (see the links below), The Lab by Ryan Opaz (https://thelabporto.com/) , and Oportuno (https://www.o-portuno.pt/) , the new bar and shop by Blackett.

Why Kickstarter?

We chose Kickstarter because we wanted to bring the community along on this journey rather than fully pre-invest the entire project ourselves. As every entrepreneur knows, there is always a chicken-and-egg situation when launching something new.

Through crowdfunding, we were able to cover our main expenses:

  • Printing – €4,500

  • Marketing and Kickstarter fees – €2,000

  • Design – €1,500

  • Worldwide shipping – €1,000

  • Photography and studio – €900

  • Video production – €1,000

  • Editorial Costs - €1,000

Even though we went over budget, we are optimistic that we will break even after selling around 1,200 books. The book is priced at €29.95, offering both value and expertise in every page.
