Port Wine Lodges
& Douro Valley Quintas
The complete visitor guide — every certified lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia and every quinta open for visits in the Douro Valley. Opening hours, booking tips and what makes each unique.
On the southern bank of the Douro River, directly across from Porto, lies one of the world's most concentrated wine districts. Vila Nova de Gaia is where Port wine has been aged and shipped for over 300 years. Walk into a cool, barrel-scented cellar, follow the story from Douro vine to bottle, and finish with a tasting that will redefine what you knew about fortified wine.
Further upstream, the Douro Valley — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world's first officially demarcated wine region (1756) — offers visits to the actual quintas where Port wine is born, amid Europe's most dramatic terraced vineyard landscapes.
Before You Go — Essential Tips
The Port Wine Lodges
All lodges are in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the Douro from Porto. Riverfront lodges (Sandeman, Cálem, Kopke) are most accessible. The upper-hill lodges (Graham's, Cockburn's) require a short uphill walk but are less crowded and more atmospheric.
The Douro Valley Quintas
The Douro Valley is where Port wine is born. The terraced schist vineyards are among the world's most dramatic landscapes — and many quintas are open for visits and tastings. Most require advance reservation. Porto to Pinhão: 1.5–2 hours by road or the scenic Douro train line.
Getting There
Vila Nova de Gaia is just across the Douro from Porto — easily walkable. For Douro Valley quintas, a car is ideal; the train is scenic and serves key stops.
